There is a model of facilitation that positions the facilitator above the group. The expert. The one who knows where the work leads. This model has its uses. It also has a ceiling.
The ceiling is this: when the facilitator stands above the circle, the circle cannot rise above the facilitator. The person at the front is always, in some sense, performing competence rather than inhabiting humanity.
There is another model. The wisdom keeper. Not the one who knows, but the one who has genuinely lived the questions. Whose authority comes not from training alone but from the earned intimacy of their own experience.
This facilitator does not stand above the circle. They are woven into it. Their presence is not a display of expertise but an offering of genuine encounter. They are not leading from the front. They are traveling alongside.
I have been both. And I know which one actually moves something.
The work of becoming a wisdom keeper is not a training program. It is a life. It requires the willingness to be genuinely changed by what we facilitate. To let the work work on us as much as it works through us.
This is what I mean by non-hierarchical facilitation. The holding comes from genuine presence rather than positional authority. From the body of lived experience rather than the credential on the wall.
